What to See?

Wat Chalong

Phuket’s most famous and revered Buddhist temple in the Chalong area.

Wat Chalong is Phuket’s most important and most revered Buddhist temple, as well as one of the island’s most significant cultural landmarks. Founded in the early 19th century, it was established in honor of two highly respected monks, Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang, known for their knowledge of herbal medicine and healing.

During the Chinese miners’ rebellion, the temple served as a refuge for local residents, while the monks treated the wounded and helped mediate during the conflict.

Today, Wat Chalong remains an active spiritual center visited by both Buddhist pilgrims and travelers interested in Thai history, culture, and religion.

What to see:

  • Phra Mahathat Chedi - a tall pagoda believed to house a fragment of Buddha’s bone
  • Ubosot - the main ordination hall where religious ceremonies take place
  • Viharn - a visitor-accessible hall with three monk statues covered in gold leaf
  • A ceremonial firecracker kiln, where firecrackers are set off in gratitude for answered prayers
  • The former monk’s residence connected to stories about the temple’s founders

Special experiences:
Inside the Viharn, visitors can try a traditional fortune-telling ritual using numbered sticks, each linked to a written prediction.

Behind the temple, there is a lake where offerings such as fish, frogs, or snakes are sometimes released as part of local spiritual practice.

Practical information:
Open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Entry is free.

Visitors should follow the temple dress code: shoulders and knees must be covered.

Wat Chalong can be visited independently or included as part of a Phuket island sightseeing tour.

Wat Chalong is an essential stop for anyone wanting to better understand Phuket’s spiritual, cultural, and historical identity.
